Node-RED on MassiveGRID PaaS

Node-RED is a flow-based programming tool built on Node.js for wiring together devices, APIs and online services. Its browser editor lets you connect MQTT, HTTP, databases, dashboards and thousands of community nodes into flows. The MassiveGRID PaaS package deploys a Node-RED development environment in one click, ideal for IoT back ends in the cloud.

Both buttons open the MassiveGRID PaaS dashboard with Node-RED pre-selected. The trial needs no credit card.

What is Node-RED?

Originally created at IBM for the Internet of Things, Node-RED has become a general-purpose integration tool. Flows are built visually from nodes that receive messages, transform them and send them on: an MQTT input from sensors, a function node to compute an average, a database node to store it and a dashboard gauge to show it. More than 4,000 community nodes add integrations from Modbus to Telegram.

The package deploys Node-RED on a Node.js server with persistent storage for flows and installed nodes, secured with a login and HTTPS. It pairs naturally with the Eclipse Mosquitto MQTT broker package to form a complete IoT back end, and vertical auto-scaling absorbs bursts of device messages.

What the Node-RED Package Deploys

Marketplace packages are not bare container images. One click provisions a complete, production-shaped environment on MassiveGRID infrastructure.

  • Node.js application server: A Node.js container running the current Node-RED release with process management.
  • Persistent flows and nodes: Flow files, credentials and installed palette nodes on persistent storage with snapshots.
  • Editor authentication and HTTPS: Admin login configured at install and the editor served over HTTPS on the platform subdomain.
  • HTTP endpoints: Flows can expose webhooks and dashboards on the same domain immediately.

Why Teams Choose Node-RED

Visual integration

Wire devices, APIs and services together in the browser with immediate deployment.

IoT protocols

MQTT, HTTP, WebSocket, TCP/UDP, serial and Modbus nodes, plus a dashboard for live data.

Huge node library

Install community nodes from the palette manager for databases, messaging, cloud APIs and AI.

Cloud-hosted and always on

Runs in a MassiveGRID region near your devices with auto-scaling, snapshots and HTTPS.

How to Install Node-RED on MassiveGRID PaaS

Installing the package takes three steps and a few minutes of waiting. No servers to provision, no configuration files to edit.

01

Open the installer

Click Install with free trial or Install to my account. The MassiveGRID PaaS dashboard opens with the Node-RED package pre-selected, so nothing has to be copied or pasted.

02

Sign up or sign in

New to the platform? Sign up for the free 14-day trial, which needs no credit card. Existing customers sign in with their usual dashboard credentials.

03

Choose region and deploy

Name the environment, pick New York, London, Frankfurt or Singapore, and confirm. The platform builds every Node-RED node, wires them together and hands you the live URL and credentials.

Who Runs Node-RED on PaaS

IoT data collection

Receiving telemetry over MQTT, transforming it and storing it in a database.

Home and building automation logic

Rules and dashboards for smart devices, hosted centrally.

Lightweight API integrations

Webhook receivers and glue logic between services for small teams.

Why Run Node-RED on MassiveGRID PaaS

Built for uptime. Node-RED runs on MassiveGRID's high-availability platform, where every environment is covered by a 100% uptime SLA. Nodes live on redundant hosts, storage is replicated, and failed containers are restarted or migrated automatically.

Pay for what you use. Billing is hourly and per cloudlet (128 MiB RAM plus 400 MHz CPU). Vertical auto-scaling adds and removes cloudlets as load changes, so a quiet Node-RED environment costs a few dollars a month and a busy one grows without a migration. Full details are on the PaaS page.

Your choice of jurisdiction. Deploy in New York, London, Frankfurt or Singapore and keep data inside the region your users or regulators require. MassiveGRID is ISO 9001 certified and GDPR compliant, and has run hosting infrastructure since 2003.

No lock-in. The package is a standard Jelastic Packaging Standard (JPS) manifest. You keep root-level access to the containers, can export the manifest, and can move the workload to any other Jelastic-compatible platform or to your own servers at any time.

Node-RED Questions

Node-RED excels at IoT, protocols and event streams with low latency. n8n targets business SaaS integrations and AI workflows with many prebuilt app nodes. Both are one-click installs; choose by the systems you connect.
Yes. Add a MySQL, PostgreSQL or MongoDB node to the environment from the topology editor, install the matching Node-RED node from the palette, and write directly from flows.
The package is labelled a development environment, but Node-RED runs in production widely. For production, set strong credentials, enable projects or Git backup of flows, and consider a second instance behind a load balancer for redundancy.
There is no licence fee for the package. You pay only for the resources the Node-RED environment consumes, billed hourly in cloudlets of 128 MiB RAM plus 400 MHz CPU. A single-node environment starts at $2.46 per month, or $0.003372 per hour, and clustered topologies cost more because they run more nodes. See the PaaS pricing page for details.
MassiveGRID PaaS runs in four regions: New York, London, Frankfurt and Singapore. You pick the region in the installer, and every environment is covered by the 100% uptime SLA. Read more about our data centres and network.
Yes. New accounts get a 14-day free trial with no credit card required. Click Install with free trial above, sign up, and the installer opens with Node-RED already selected. Trial environments can be scaled, tested and deleted freely, and they convert to pay-per-use billing only when you add a payment method.
