Let's Encrypt SSL Add-on for PaaS

The Let's Encrypt Free SSL add-on issues trusted certificates from Let's Encrypt for your environment's custom domains and renews them automatically before they expire. Attach it to a load balancer or application server on MassiveGRID PaaS and your site serves HTTPS on your own domain within minutes, at no cost.

Both buttons open the MassiveGRID PaaS dashboard with Let's Encrypt SSL pre-selected. The trial needs no credit card.

What is Let's Encrypt SSL?

Every MassiveGRID PaaS environment already has HTTPS on its platform subdomain. Once you point your own domain at the environment, you need a certificate for that name. Let's Encrypt is the free, automated certificate authority trusted by every browser, and this add-on integrates it with the platform: it proves domain control, installs the certificate on the right node, configures the web server and schedules renewal.

The add-on supports single domains, multiple domains on one certificate and wildcard certificates via DNS validation. It works on NGINX and Apache PHP servers, LiteSpeed, Tomcat and other Java servers, Node.js, Ruby, Python and Go runtimes, the NGINX and HAProxy load balancers, and the Traffic Distributor. When nodes are added by scaling, the certificate is applied to them too.

What Let's Encrypt SSL Changes in Your Environment

Add-ons run against an environment you already have. Nothing is rebuilt, and the change can be removed from the same dashboard.

  • Certificate issuance: Requests a certificate from Let's Encrypt for the domains you list, validating via HTTP or DNS challenge.
  • Web server configuration: Installs the certificate and key on the target layer and enables HTTPS with a redirect from HTTP if desired.
  • Automatic renewal: A scheduled task renews certificates before expiry (every 90 days) and reloads the server without downtime.
  • Scaling awareness: New nodes added to the layer receive the certificate automatically.

Why Run Let's Encrypt SSL on MassiveGRID PaaS

Built for uptime. Let's Encrypt SSL runs on MassiveGRID's high-availability platform, where every environment is covered by a 100% uptime SLA. Nodes live on redundant hosts, storage is replicated, and failed containers are restarted or migrated automatically.

Pay for what you use. Billing is hourly and per cloudlet (128 MiB RAM plus 400 MHz CPU). Vertical auto-scaling adds and removes cloudlets as load changes, so a quiet Let's Encrypt SSL environment costs a few dollars a month and a busy one grows without a migration. Full details are on the PaaS page.

Your choice of jurisdiction. Deploy in New York, London, Frankfurt or Singapore and keep data inside the region your users or regulators require. MassiveGRID is ISO 9001 certified and GDPR compliant, and has run hosting infrastructure since 2003.

No lock-in. The package is a standard Jelastic Packaging Standard (JPS) manifest. You keep root-level access to the containers, can export the manifest, and can move the workload to any other Jelastic-compatible platform or to your own servers at any time.

Let's Encrypt SSL Questions

Point your domain's A record (or CNAME) at the environment's public IP or platform hostname. The add-on validates control of the domain over HTTP; for wildcards you add a DNS TXT record instead.
No. Renewal happens in the background and the web server is reloaded gracefully, in the same way as the NGINX Safe Reload add-on.
Yes. MassiveGRID PaaS lets you upload custom certificates to a layer, and MassiveGRID also sells commercial SSL certificates with extended validation and warranties for organisations that need them.
The Let's Encrypt SSL add-on itself is free. You pay only for the environment it is attached to, which is billed per use in cloudlets (128 MiB RAM plus 400 MHz CPU each). A small environment starts at $2.46 per month, or $0.003372 per hour, and the PaaS pricing page explains the model in full.
MassiveGRID PaaS runs in four regions: New York, London, Frankfurt and Singapore. You pick the region in the installer, and every environment is covered by the 100% uptime SLA. Read more about our data centres and network.
Yes. New accounts get a 14-day free trial with no credit card required. Click Install with free trial above, sign up, and the installer opens with Let's Encrypt SSL already selected. Trial environments can be scaled, tested and deleted freely, and they convert to pay-per-use billing only when you add a payment method.
