What is Eclipse Mosquitto?

MQTT is the standard messaging protocol for the Internet of Things: small, efficient and designed for unreliable networks. Devices publish readings to topics and applications subscribe to them, with quality-of-service levels, retained messages and last-will notifications. Mosquitto implements MQTT 3.1, 3.1.1 and 5.0 in a few hundred kilobytes of C and can handle thousands of concurrent connections on modest hardware.

The package deploys the broker on a dedicated node with a public IP so devices anywhere can connect, with configuration files ready for authentication, access control lists and TLS. Vertical auto-scaling covers connection spikes, and the node can be placed in the MassiveGRID region closest to your device fleet.

What the Eclipse Mosquitto Package Deploys

Marketplace packages are not bare container images. One click provisions a complete, production-shaped environment on MassiveGRID infrastructure.

  • Mosquitto broker node: A dedicated container running the current Mosquitto release with its configuration exposed for editing.
  • Public IP and MQTT ports: A public address with the standard MQTT (1883), MQTT over TLS (8883) and WebSocket ports available.
  • Authentication and ACL templates: Password file and access-control configuration ready to enable per-device credentials.
  • Persistence: Retained messages and subscriptions stored on persistent disk so a restart does not lose state.

Why Teams Choose Eclipse Mosquitto

Standards-compliant MQTT

Full MQTT 5.0, 3.1.1 and 3.1 support with QoS 0, 1 and 2, retained messages and wills.

Lightweight and fast

Handles thousands of connections on a small cloudlet allocation, keeping IoT back ends cheap.

Secure by configuration

TLS, username/password and certificate authentication, and topic-level ACLs.

Bridges and integration

Bridge to other brokers or cloud IoT services, and feed Node-RED or n8n flows.

How to Install Eclipse Mosquitto on MassiveGRID PaaS

Installing the package takes three steps and a few minutes of waiting. No servers to provision, no configuration files to edit.

01

Open the installer

Click Install with free trial or Install to my account. The MassiveGRID PaaS dashboard opens with the Eclipse Mosquitto package pre-selected, so nothing has to be copied or pasted.

02

Sign up or sign in

New to the platform? Sign up for the free 14-day trial, which needs no credit card. Existing customers sign in with their usual dashboard credentials.

03

Choose region and deploy

Name the environment, pick New York, London, Frankfurt or Singapore, and confirm. The platform builds every Eclipse Mosquitto node, wires them together and hands you the live URL and credentials.

Who Runs Eclipse Mosquitto on PaaS

IoT device fleets

Sensors, meters and gateways publishing telemetry to a central broker.

Home and building automation

Smart-building controllers, Home Assistant and similar systems that use MQTT as their bus.

Application messaging

Lightweight pub/sub between microservices or between servers and browsers over WebSockets.

Why Run Eclipse Mosquitto on MassiveGRID PaaS

Built for uptime. Eclipse Mosquitto runs on MassiveGRID's high-availability platform, where every environment is covered by a 100% uptime SLA. Nodes live on redundant hosts, storage is replicated, and failed containers are restarted or migrated automatically.

Pay for what you use. Billing is hourly and per cloudlet (128 MiB RAM plus 400 MHz CPU). Vertical auto-scaling adds and removes cloudlets as load changes, so a quiet Eclipse Mosquitto environment costs a few dollars a month and a busy one grows without a migration. Full details are on the PaaS page.

Your choice of jurisdiction. Deploy in New York, London, Frankfurt or Singapore and keep data inside the region your users or regulators require. MassiveGRID is ISO 9001 certified and GDPR compliant, and has run hosting infrastructure since 2003.

No lock-in. The package is a standard Jelastic Packaging Standard (JPS) manifest. You keep root-level access to the containers, can export the manifest, and can move the workload to any other Jelastic-compatible platform or to your own servers at any time.

Eclipse Mosquitto Questions

Enable password authentication and ACLs in the configuration file, and enable TLS on port 8883 with a certificate from the Let's Encrypt add-on or your own CA. Disable anonymous access before exposing the broker to the internet.
Mosquitto routinely handles tens of thousands of connections on a few gigabytes of RAM, depending on message rate. Vertical auto-scaling adds cloudlets as connections grow; for very large fleets, run several brokers bridged together.
Yes. Enable the WebSocket listener in the configuration and browser clients can connect directly, which suits dashboards and control panels.
There is no licence fee for the package. You pay only for the resources the Eclipse Mosquitto environment consumes, billed hourly in cloudlets of 128 MiB RAM plus 400 MHz CPU. A single-node environment starts at $2.46 per month, or $0.003372 per hour, and clustered topologies cost more because they run more nodes. See the PaaS pricing page for details.
MassiveGRID PaaS runs in four regions: New York, London, Frankfurt and Singapore. You pick the region in the installer, and every environment is covered by the 100% uptime SLA. Read more about our data centres and network.
Yes. New accounts get a 14-day free trial with no credit card required. Click Install with free trial above, sign up, and the installer opens with Eclipse Mosquitto already selected. Trial environments can be scaled, tested and deleted freely, and they convert to pay-per-use billing only when you add a payment method.
