What is Liferay?

Liferay Portal has been developed since 2000 and is used by banks, insurers, governments and universities to give employees, customers and partners a single, personalised entry point to many back-end systems. It provides user and role management, page composition from portlets and widgets, document libraries, forms, workflow and web content management, all extensible with Java and OSGi modules.

It is a heavyweight Java application. The marketplace package deploys the Liferay Tomcat bundle with an appropriately sized JVM and a linked relational database, so architects can stand up a proof of concept in minutes and grow it into a production portal with vertical auto-scaling and, later, additional nodes.

What the Liferay Package Deploys

Marketplace packages are not bare container images. One click provisions a complete, production-shaped environment on MassiveGRID infrastructure.

  • Java application server: The Liferay Tomcat bundle with JVM heap and thread settings matched to the environment's cloudlet limit.
  • Relational database: A linked database container for Liferay's portal schema, configured during installation.
  • Document library storage: Persistent storage for the document and media library with platform snapshots.
  • Built-in domain and SSL: Immediate HTTPS access to the portal and its APIs.

Why Teams Choose Liferay

Portal and DXP features

Sites, pages, widgets, web content, documents, forms, workflow, blogs, wikis and message boards in one platform.

Identity and personalisation

LDAP, SAML and OAuth integration, roles, organisations and segmentation for personalised experiences.

Enterprise integration

OSGi modules, REST and GraphQL APIs connect the portal to ERP, CRM and legacy systems.

Scale when adopted

Start with one node for a pilot; add a load balancer and a second Liferay node with shared storage when the portal goes live to thousands of users.

How to Install Liferay on MassiveGRID PaaS

Installing the package takes three steps and a few minutes of waiting. No servers to provision, no configuration files to edit.

01

Open the installer

Click Install with free trial or Install to my account. The MassiveGRID PaaS dashboard opens with the Liferay package pre-selected, so nothing has to be copied or pasted.

02

Sign up or sign in

New to the platform? Sign up for the free 14-day trial, which needs no credit card. Existing customers sign in with their usual dashboard credentials.

03

Choose region and deploy

Name the environment, pick New York, London, Frankfurt or Singapore, and confirm. The platform builds every Liferay node, wires them together and hands you the live URL and credentials.

Who Runs Liferay on PaaS

Employee intranets

Company portals combining news, documents, HR self-service and application links behind single sign-on.

Customer and partner portals

Banks, insurers and manufacturers giving external users personalised access to accounts, documents and support.

Government citizen portals

Public-service portals with forms, workflows and identity integration, hosted in the required jurisdiction.

Why Run Liferay on MassiveGRID PaaS

Built for uptime. Liferay runs on MassiveGRID's high-availability platform, where every environment is covered by a 100% uptime SLA. Nodes live on redundant hosts, storage is replicated, and failed containers are restarted or migrated automatically.

Pay for what you use. Billing is hourly and per cloudlet (128 MiB RAM plus 400 MHz CPU). Vertical auto-scaling adds and removes cloudlets as load changes, so a quiet Liferay environment costs a few dollars a month and a busy one grows without a migration. Full details are on the PaaS page.

Your choice of jurisdiction. Deploy in New York, London, Frankfurt or Singapore and keep data inside the region your users or regulators require. MassiveGRID is ISO 9001 certified and GDPR compliant, and has run hosting infrastructure since 2003.

No lock-in. The package is a standard Jelastic Packaging Standard (JPS) manifest. You keep root-level access to the containers, can export the manifest, and can move the workload to any other Jelastic-compatible platform or to your own servers at any time.

Liferay Questions

Liferay recommends several gigabytes of heap even for development. Plan on at least 4 GB for a working instance and set the cloudlet limit accordingly; vertical auto-scaling covers peaks above that.
No. The package deploys the open-source Liferay Portal Community Edition. Liferay DXP is the commercial edition with subscription support; customers with a DXP licence can deploy it into the same kind of environment.
Yes. Liferay supports clustering with a shared database, shared document library and cluster-link configuration. Add nodes in the topology editor, use shared storage for the document library, and put an NGINX load balancer in front.
There is no licence fee for the package. You pay only for the resources the Liferay environment consumes, billed hourly in cloudlets of 128 MiB RAM plus 400 MHz CPU. A single-node environment starts at $2.46 per month, or $0.003372 per hour, and clustered topologies cost more because they run more nodes. See the PaaS pricing page for details.
MassiveGRID PaaS runs in four regions: New York, London, Frankfurt and Singapore. You pick the region in the installer, and every environment is covered by the 100% uptime SLA. Read more about our data centres and network.
Yes. New accounts get a 14-day free trial with no credit card required. Click Install with free trial above, sign up, and the installer opens with Liferay already selected. Trial environments can be scaled, tested and deleted freely, and they convert to pay-per-use billing only when you add a payment method.
