What is OpenCms?
OpenCms has been in development since 2000 and is used by enterprises, universities and public bodies across Europe. Content is stored as structured XML, edited through an in-page editor with reusable content elements, and can be published to static or dynamic front ends. Its module system, template mechanism and Apache Solr search integration make it a good base for multi-site, multilingual corporate websites.
The marketplace package deploys the OpenCms web application on Tomcat with a linked database and completes the setup wizard, so editors and developers can log into the workplace immediately. Vertical auto-scaling and snapshots come from the platform.
What the OpenCms Package Deploys
Marketplace packages are not bare container images. One click provisions a complete, production-shaped environment on MassiveGRID infrastructure.
- Java application server: Tomcat running the OpenCms web application with a JVM sized to the environment's cloudlets.
- MySQL or MariaDB database: A linked database container holding the OpenCms virtual file system and content.
- OpenCms core and demo modules: The current release with the setup wizard completed and the optional demo site available for exploration.
- Built-in domain and SSL: HTTPS on a platform subdomain immediately, with your own domain via Let's Encrypt.
Why Teams Choose OpenCms
Structured XML content
Content types defined in XSD schemas keep data reusable across templates, channels and languages.
In-page editing
Editors drag content elements onto pages and edit them in place, with publishing workflows and versioning.
Multi-site and multilingual
Run several sites from one installation with locale-aware content and Solr-powered search.
Lean for a Java CMS
OpenCms runs well with 1 to 2 GB of heap, making it one of the more economical Java CMSs to host per use.

Why Run OpenCms on MassiveGRID PaaS
Built for uptime. OpenCms runs on MassiveGRID's high-availability platform, where every environment is covered by a 100% uptime SLA. Nodes live on redundant hosts, storage is replicated, and failed containers are restarted or migrated automatically.
Pay for what you use. Billing is hourly and per cloudlet (128 MiB RAM plus 400 MHz CPU). Vertical auto-scaling adds and removes cloudlets as load changes, so a quiet OpenCms environment costs a few dollars a month and a busy one grows without a migration. Full details are on the PaaS page.
Your choice of jurisdiction. Deploy in New York, London, Frankfurt or Singapore and keep data inside the region your users or regulators require. MassiveGRID is ISO 9001 certified and GDPR compliant, and has run hosting infrastructure since 2003.
No lock-in. The package is a standard Jelastic Packaging Standard (JPS) manifest. You keep root-level access to the containers, can export the manifest, and can move the workload to any other Jelastic-compatible platform or to your own servers at any time.
