What is Moodle?

Moodle provides everything an online course needs: content pages, assignments with grading workflows, quizzes with question banks, forums, competencies, badges, and integrations with video conferencing, plagiarism checkers and student information systems through LTI and web services. Its plugin directory has more than 2,000 entries, and institutions customise it heavily.

The operational challenge of Moodle is load that arrives in waves: term start, assignment deadlines and exam windows can multiply traffic many times over in an hour. Pay-per-use PaaS with vertical auto-scaling fits that pattern better than a fixed server. The package deploys Moodle with a tuned PHP server and database, and the environment can be extended with Redis caching and additional web nodes when a single server is no longer enough.

What the Moodle Package Deploys

Marketplace packages are not bare container images. One click provisions a complete, production-shaped environment on MassiveGRID infrastructure.

  • PHP application server: Apache or NGINX with PHP-FPM, OPcache and Moodle's required extensions (intl, soap, xmlrpc, zip and others), with upload limits raised for course files.
  • Database: A linked MySQL/MariaDB or PostgreSQL container with credentials pre-filled in Moodle's configuration.
  • Moodledata storage: Persistent storage for uploaded files, backups and caches, outside the web root as Moodle requires.
  • Built-in domain and SSL: Learners connect over HTTPS immediately; attach your institution's domain with Let's Encrypt.

Why Teams Choose Moodle

Complete LMS feature set

Courses, quizzes, assignments, gradebook, forums, competencies, badges and H5P interactive content out of the box.

Scales for exam day

Vertical auto-scaling adds cloudlets during peaks; horizontal scaling with a load balancer and shared moodledata is available for large institutions.

Integrations

LTI, SCORM, web services and plugins for BigBlueButton, Zoom, Turnitin, Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace.

Learner data under your control

Host in New York, London, Frankfurt or Singapore to meet FERPA, GDPR or national education-data rules.

How to Install Moodle on MassiveGRID PaaS

Installing the package takes three steps and a few minutes of waiting. No servers to provision, no configuration files to edit.

01

Open the installer

Click Install with free trial or Install to my account. The MassiveGRID PaaS dashboard opens with the Moodle package pre-selected, so nothing has to be copied or pasted.

02

Sign up or sign in

New to the platform? Sign up for the free 14-day trial, which needs no credit card. Existing customers sign in with their usual dashboard credentials.

03

Choose region and deploy

Name the environment, pick New York, London, Frankfurt or Singapore, and confirm. The platform builds every Moodle node, wires them together and hands you the live URL and credentials.

Organisations selling courses online, often paired with WordPress or an e-commerce front end.

Why Run Moodle on MassiveGRID PaaS

Built for uptime. Moodle runs on MassiveGRID's high-availability platform, where every environment is covered by a 100% uptime SLA. Nodes live on redundant hosts, storage is replicated, and failed containers are restarted or migrated automatically.

Pay for what you use. Billing is hourly and per cloudlet (128 MiB RAM plus 400 MHz CPU). Vertical auto-scaling adds and removes cloudlets as load changes, so a quiet Moodle environment costs a few dollars a month and a busy one grows without a migration. Full details are on the PaaS page.

Your choice of jurisdiction. Deploy in New York, London, Frankfurt or Singapore and keep data inside the region your users or regulators require. MassiveGRID is ISO 9001 certified and GDPR compliant, and has run hosting infrastructure since 2003.

No lock-in. The package is a standard Jelastic Packaging Standard (JPS) manifest. You keep root-level access to the containers, can export the manifest, and can move the workload to any other Jelastic-compatible platform or to your own servers at any time.

Moodle Questions

A rough rule is that a few hundred concurrent active users need several gigabytes of RAM and a few CPU cores. Set a cloudlet ceiling that covers your largest exam cohort, enable vertical auto-scaling, and add a Redis node for the MUC cache. For very large institutions, add web nodes behind a load balancer.
Use the platform's scheduler to invoke Moodle's CLI cron script every minute from the application server, exactly as Moodle recommends. The built-in web SSH client lets you test it.
Yes. Moodle's automated course backups write to moodledata, and the Backup Storage and Database Backup/Restore add-ons copy files and database dumps to a separate node on a schedule.
There is no licence fee for the package. You pay only for the resources the Moodle environment consumes, billed hourly in cloudlets of 128 MiB RAM plus 400 MHz CPU. A single-node environment starts at $2.46 per month, or $0.003372 per hour, and clustered topologies cost more because they run more nodes. See the PaaS pricing page for details.
MassiveGRID PaaS runs in four regions: New York, London, Frankfurt and Singapore. You pick the region in the installer, and every environment is covered by the 100% uptime SLA. Read more about our data centres and network.
Yes. New accounts get a 14-day free trial with no credit card required. Click Install with free trial above, sign up, and the installer opens with Moodle already selected. Trial environments can be scaled, tested and deleted freely, and they convert to pay-per-use billing only when you add a payment method.
