Why US organisations host Nextcloud in New York

Contracts, HIPAA and latency

The United States has no federal GDPR, but it has three things that make the hosting region a decision rather than a default. The first is contractual: enterprise procurement templates, state privacy laws such as the CCPA, and public-sector agreements routinely ask where data is stored, and "in the United States" is the answer they expect. The second is sector regulation, above all HIPAA: a covered entity or business associate needs a Business Associate Agreement with its hosting provider and a deployment it can audit. MassiveGRID signs a BAA for its U.S. hosting, and the HIPAA hosting page lists the products covered and the Security Rule controls mapped. The third is distance: a Nextcloud instance in Europe adds 80 to 100 milliseconds to every sync, keystroke in Nextcloud Office and Talk packet for a US team, and a Singapore one adds more.

MassiveGRID's U.S. region is served from New York, which puts the Northeast corridor within a few milliseconds and the whole country within 70. For organisations whose users are in both the US and Europe, the usual pattern is one order per region connected with Nextcloud's federated sharing, so each entity's data sits under its own law; the region guide covers that pattern.

The reverse concern applies too. US law can reach data stored in the US, which is exactly why EU and UK organisations should choose the E.U. or U.K. region instead, and why a US company serving European customers may want to split. What a US organisation gets from the New York region is a Nextcloud Enterprise workspace operated by an ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 certified provider, with daily encrypted backups, two-factor authentication, file access logs and the retention and export controls that state privacy laws and HIPAA's proposed Security Rule update both lean on; our HIPAA collaboration platform guide goes through those controls one by one.

Organisations that also want mail, identity and security monitoring run as one managed service should look at Sovereign Workspaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, for its U.S. hosting. The HIPAA hosting page lists the products covered and maps the controls to the Security Rule. Ask for the BAA when you order or through the support portal, and read the HIPAA collaboration platform guide for the controls you configure on your side.
The U.S. region is served from MassiveGRID's New York datacenter. Daily encrypted backups are kept for 30 days in a geographically separate datacenter; tell us if your contract requires the backup copy to stay inside the United States and we will confirm the location in writing.
Technically yes, legally it is the case EU regulators scrutinise most. A US company with a meaningful EU customer base usually runs a second order in the E.U. region (Frankfurt) and connects the two with federated sharing, so EU customers' data never leaves the EU.
The U.S. region is served from MassiveGRID's New York datacenter. Your files, mailboxes, calendars and backups for that order stay in the region you pick at checkout; backups are kept encrypted for 30 days in a geographically separate datacenter of the same provider network.

The first month costs $1 for the whole team on any plan ordered on monthly billing with coupon code NEXTCLOUD, which the Order buttons apply for you. After that the regular per-user price applies, and you can change plan or cancel at any time.
