Why UK organisations host Nextcloud in London

The legal and practical case for a UK region

Since the UK left the EU it has its own data protection regime: UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, enforced by the Information Commissioner's Office. Data moving between the UK and the EU flows on the strength of the EU's adequacy decision for the UK, which is periodically renewed and politically contingent, and the two regimes have begun to diverge in their details. For a UK organisation the simplest position is to keep the data in the UK: UK law applies directly, nothing depends on an adequacy decision being renewed in either direction, and the answer to a client's "where is our data" question is one word. Our post-Brexit guide works through adequacy, the international data transfer agreement and when an EU region is still acceptable.

The practical case is latency. Nextcloud's desktop client syncs continuously, Nextcloud Office round-trips every keystroke to the document server, and Talk carries audio and video in real time. From London, users anywhere in Britain and Ireland see single-digit milliseconds; from Frankfurt they see 15 to 25, and from a US region 80 or more. For a 30-person firm that lives in shared documents all day, that difference is felt, not measured.

Three groups ask for a UK region most often. Regulated professions: solicitors under the SRA, accountants, and financial services firms whose FCA obligations include knowing where client data is processed. Public sector and its suppliers: councils, NHS suppliers and charities whose contracts or funders specify UK data residency. Companies with EU and US customers who want a neutral jurisdiction that both sides accept. All three get the same thing from a Hub plan: a Nextcloud Enterprise workspace in London, operated by an ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 certified provider, with a data processing agreement available on request.

What every plan includes

The full suite, run for you

Every Nextcloud Hub plan runs on Nextcloud Enterprise Ultimate operated by MassiveGRID. You choose the plan and the region; the platform, updates, backups and support are included in the per-user price. See the full plan comparison for the Business and Enterprise extras.

Nextcloud Office

Documents, spreadsheets and presentations edited together in the browser, with DOCX, XLSX, PPTX and ODF compatibility, on every plan.

Email, Calendar and Contacts

A mailbox per user (Standard Email on Starter and Business, Enterprise Email on Enterprise), shared calendars and address books over CalDAV and CardDAV.

Files and Photos

100 GB per user on Starter and 1 TB on Business and Enterprise, with versioning, trash, password-protected share links and desktop and mobile sync clients.

Backups and updates

Support and SLA

Ticket support on Starter, priority on Business and 24x7 on Enterprise, on a platform with a 100% uptime SLA, ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 certified operations since 2003.

Beyond 50 users, or on your own domain

Dedicated Nextcloud Enterprise instances

Hub plans are ordered online for 1 to 50 users on MassiveGRID's shared platform. Organisations that need their own domain and branding, a compliance boundary nobody else shares, LDAP or SAML against their own directory, or more than 50 seats move to a dedicated Nextcloud Enterprise instance in the same region: single-tenant, with the Standard, Premium or Ultimate subscription tier and add-ons you choose, priced per user with hosting from $15.22 per user per month and billed annually. Organisations that also want mail, identity and security monitoring run as one managed service should look at Sovereign Workspaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hosting location is the part of UK GDPR compliance that a provider can settle for you: with the data in the UK there is no international transfer to document. The rest (a data processing agreement, access controls, retention, breach procedures) applies wherever the server is, and MassiveGRID's ISO 27001 operations and data processing agreement cover the provider side of it.
Usually yes, because the EU recognises the UK as adequate, but the decision is time-limited and your EU customers may ask about it. Organisations with a large EU customer base often run one order in the U.K. region and one in the E.U. region (Frankfurt) and connect them with Nextcloud's federated sharing. Our region guide explains the trade-off.
Starter for teams that live in documents, calls and email, Business where boards, tasks and large files matter or where 1 TB per user is needed, and Enterprise for the partners and finance staff who need delegated mail and 24x7 support. Plans can be mixed across one organisation.
The U.K. region is served from MassiveGRID's London datacenter. Your files, mailboxes, calendars and backups for that order stay in the region you pick at checkout; backups are kept encrypted for 30 days in a geographically separate datacenter of the same provider network.
Hub plans are ordered online for 1 to 50 users. Above that, or when you need your own domain, branding and a compliance boundary of your own, the team sets up a dedicated Nextcloud Enterprise instance, priced per user with hosting from $15.22 per user per month and billed annually.
The first month costs $1 for the whole team on any plan ordered on monthly billing with coupon code NEXTCLOUD, which the Order buttons apply for you. After that the regular per-user price applies, and you can change plan or cancel at any time.
