Short answer: "Nextcloud Office" is not one program. It is the name for collaborative document editing inside Nextcloud, delivered by one of three engines: Collabora Online, the long-standing LibreOffice-based option; Euro-Office, the European fork of ONLYOFFICE that Nextcloud added to its Office range in Hub 26 Spring and now ships with a desktop client; and the original ONLYOFFICE connector, which ONLYOFFICE says it will keep maintaining after suspending its Nextcloud partnership in March 2026. On a managed plan the question is whether an engine is included, set up and licensed for your user count, or left for you to install. Every MassiveGRID Nextcloud Hub plan includes Nextcloud Office; this guide explains what sits behind that and what to check with any host.

Why the office suite is where hosting plans differ most

Files, calendar and contacts are built into the Nextcloud server. Document editing is not. It runs as a separate service (a document server) that the Nextcloud instance talks to, and that service has its own resource needs, its own licensing and, since this spring, its own politics. A hosting plan can therefore be "Nextcloud" and still leave you without a way to open a spreadsheet, or with a demo-grade editor that stops at twenty simultaneous users. For a team replacing Google Docs or Microsoft Word, that is the single most important line to read in a plan description.

The three engines in 2026

Collabora Online. Built on LibreOffice by Collabora Productivity, available under the Mozilla Public License, and the editor Nextcloud describes as the traditional Nextcloud Office option. Its strength is document fidelity: because it is LibreOffice underneath, it handles complex DOCX, ODF and PDF conversion well, and it has no user cap in the software itself. The free developer build, CODE, is meant for small deployments; production use at scale is done through Collabora's commercial support or a partner. Hub 26 Summer gave it AI tools, Writer and Calc improvements and better commenting. Our Collabora setup guide covers the self-hosted installation.

Euro-Office. A fork of the ONLYOFFICE document server, announced in spring 2026 by a European consortium that includes Nextcloud and IONOS, and folded into the Nextcloud Office range with Hub 26 Spring on 9 June 2026. It keeps ONLYOFFICE's Microsoft-like interface and strong DOCX compatibility, is fully open source, integrates with the Smart Picker and the Nextcloud Assistant, and with Hub 26 Summer gained desktop editors for Windows, macOS and Linux, which Nextcloud said would be available for download "in the coming weeks" after the 16 September release. It is the newest of the three, so track record is the thing it does not yet have.

ONLYOFFICE. The original. ONLYOFFICE suspended its eight-year partnership with Nextcloud in late March 2026, arguing the fork breached the AGPL's attribution requirements, which Nextcloud disputes. ONLYOFFICE has said it will continue to support and develop its own connector for Nextcloud and that existing customers are not affected. Its community edition is limited to 20 simultaneous connections; beyond that you need a commercial licence. It remains a good editor, and organisations that already licence it can keep using it, but a new buyer should assume the integration will receive less attention from Nextcloud's side than the other two.

What a managed plan should include

For a plan to say "Office included" and mean it, four things have to be true: a document server is running, it is sized and licensed for everyone on the plan to edit at once, it is updated alongside the Nextcloud server, and someone answers when it breaks. The Nextcloud App Store will happily let an administrator install the Collabora or ONLYOFFICE app on any instance, which is not the same thing as any of those four.

On MassiveGRID's Nextcloud Hub plans, Nextcloud Office is part of every tier, Starter included, alongside Talk, email, Calendar and Contacts, on a Nextcloud Enterprise Ultimate platform that MassiveGRID updates and backs up. The platform page describes the editing as built-in Collabora Online or ONLYOFFICE integration with full DOCX, XLSX, PPTX and ODF compatibility. Dedicated Nextcloud Enterprise instances carry an Office add-on on the subscription ($22.61 per user per year on the pricing page's calculator), which is where an organisation chooses its engine and the Euro-Office desktop editors become relevant. If your team has a strong preference, say so when you request the dedicated-instance quote.

Five things to check with any Nextcloud host

  1. Which engine, and is it in the price? "Office available" often means "you can install the app". Ask whether a document server is running and included.
  2. How many people can edit at once? An ONLYOFFICE community server stops at 20 connections; a CODE build is tuned for a handful. For 30 people on a Monday morning that matters.
  3. Who updates it? Document servers ship security fixes on their own schedule. On a managed plan the operator should own that.
  4. Can your worst file open? Take the spreadsheet with the macros and the pivot tables and the 80-page document with tracked changes, and try them during the trial month. The Office in practice guide lists what tends to break.
  5. Is there a desktop route? Some people will never edit in a browser. Collabora pairs with LibreOffice, ONLYOFFICE has its desktop editors, and Euro-Office now has its own; the Nextcloud desktop client syncs the files either way.

Which engine to prefer

The practical advice is to stop treating the engine as the decision and treat the plan as the decision. An included, maintained editor on the plan you can afford beats the perfect editor you have to run yourself, and the small business buyer's guide shows how to test it in a month.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Nextcloud Office included in Nextcloud hosting plans?

It depends on the host. On MassiveGRID's Nextcloud Hub plans it is included on every tier, with documents, spreadsheets and presentations editable collaboratively in the browser. On storage-priced or VPS-based plans it is often an app you install and a document server you run yourself. Ask whether a document server is running, sized for your users and maintained.

What is the difference between Collabora Online and Euro-Office in Nextcloud?

Collabora Online is LibreOffice-based, strongest on format fidelity, and the long-standing Nextcloud Office option. Euro-Office is a 2026 European fork of ONLYOFFICE with a Microsoft-like interface, added to the Nextcloud Office range in Hub 26 Spring and given a desktop client in Hub 26 Summer. Both are open source and both are supported by Nextcloud.

Can I still use ONLYOFFICE with Nextcloud?

Yes. ONLYOFFICE suspended its partnership with Nextcloud in March 2026 over the Euro-Office fork, but said it would keep supporting and developing its Nextcloud connector and that existing customers are unaffected. Its community edition is limited to 20 simultaneous connections; larger deployments need a commercial licence.

Does Nextcloud Office open Microsoft Word and Excel files?

Yes. All three engines open and save DOCX, XLSX and PPTX. Everyday documents convert cleanly; complex spreadsheets with macros and documents with heavy tracked changes are the cases to test with your own files during a trial.

Is there a desktop version of Nextcloud Office?

Since Hub 26 Summer (September 2026), Nextcloud Office powered by Euro-Office has desktop editors for Windows, macOS and Linux with collaborative editing. Collabora pairs with the LibreOffice desktop suite and ONLYOFFICE has its own desktop editors. The Nextcloud desktop client syncs the files in every case.

Nextcloud Office on every plan

MassiveGRID Nextcloud Hub plans include Nextcloud Office, Talk, email, Calendar and Contacts from $5.90 per user per month, set up and maintained on a Nextcloud Enterprise platform. Try it with your own documents: the first month is $1 with coupon code NEXTCLOUD.
