Short answer: Hetzner Storage Share is a Nextcloud instance priced by disk (1 TB from about €4.29 a month excluding VAT, unlimited users, hosted in Falkenstein, Germany) and is the cheapest way to give a small group a large private drive. A managed Nextcloud Hub plan is priced per user (from $5.90 a month on MassiveGRID) and bundles Nextcloud Office, Talk, email, calendar and contacts with support and a choice of region. For five people who need storage, Storage Share costs less. For a company replacing Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, or one that cannot keep its data in a single German datacenter, a Hub plan is the product that fits. The detail is below.
Two products that share a name
Both run Nextcloud and both are "managed" in the sense that someone else patches the server. They are otherwise built for different buyers, and the quickest way to see it is the unit on the invoice.
Hetzner Storage Share sells an instance. You choose a size (NX11 with 1 TB, NX21 with 5 TB, NX31 with 10 TB), create as many user accounts as you like, and pay a flat monthly price. Traffic is unlimited, there is no minimum contract and no cancellation period, and Hetzner backs up the database and storage several times a day to a different host machine. The instance lives in Hetzner's Falkenstein datacenter, uses a Hetzner subdomain (three, seven or ten of them depending on plan), and comes with Contacts, Calendar and Tasks pre-installed; more apps can be added from the App Store. Each plan is capped at 50, 100 or 200 simultaneous connections.
A Nextcloud Hub plan on MassiveGRID sells a seat. Each user gets Files, Photos, Nextcloud Office, Talk, an email mailbox, Calendar and Contacts, 100 GB (Starter) or 1 TB (Business and Enterprise) of storage, and support from ticket to 24x7 by plan, on a Nextcloud Enterprise Ultimate platform with daily encrypted backups and a 100% uptime SLA. You choose the region at checkout: United States, Europe, United Kingdom or Asia. Plans are ordered online for 1 to 50 users and billed per user per month, with discounts up to 40% for longer terms.

The rows that decide most purchases are Office, email, region and SLA. If none of the four matters to you, Storage Share is very hard to beat on price. If two or more do, the comparison is no longer about price.
What 5 and 25 users actually pay
Monthly, before VAT and sales tax, with euros taken at roughly parity to dollars for readability.
| Team | Hetzner Storage Share | Nextcloud Hub Starter | Nextcloud Hub Business |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 users, files only, under 1 TB total | NX11: about €4.29 | $29.50 (500 GB total) | $64.50 (5 TB total) |
| 5 users, files, Office, chat and email | NX11 plus whatever Office and mail you add elsewhere | $29.50, all included | $64.50, all included |
| 25 users, under 5 TB total | NX21: about €14.19 | $147.50 (2.5 TB total) | $322.50 (25 TB total) |
| 25 users on annual billing | Same (no term discount) | $118 | $258 |
Read honestly, the first and third rows are a clear win for Storage Share: a flat €4.29 or €14.19 against $29.50 or $147.50 is not close, and if your 25 people want a shared drive and nothing else, that is the answer. The second row is where the picture changes. Adding an office suite, a video tool and 25 mailboxes to a Storage Share instance means other subscriptions, and a Google Workspace Business Starter seat alone is about $7 at list price, so the all-in Hub Starter seat at $5.90 is cheaper than Storage Share plus the apps most companies cannot do without. Where Storage Share is the better buy
- Storage is the whole requirement. A photographer's archive, a family's backup, a small team's project files. 1 TB for the price of one seat elsewhere is the headline for a reason.
- "Hosted in Germany" is the requirement. For a German company or a public body, Falkenstein is exactly where the data should be, and Hetzner's reputation on that point is deserved. Our guide for German businesses covers the BDSG and GDPR side.
- You already pay for Office and mail elsewhere and only want to move files off Dropbox or Google Drive.
- You want to leave at a moment's notice. No minimum term and no cancellation period is a genuine advantage for a trial or a short project.
Where a Hub plan is the better buy
- You are replacing Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. The replacement has to include documents, calls, calendar and mailboxes, and a Hub plan does. The complete replacement guide explains what each app covers.
- The data cannot live only in Germany. A British firm after Brexit, a U.S. company with a state-level residency clause, a Singapore office serving Asia-Pacific. A Hub plan puts the data in the U.K., the U.S. or Asia at checkout; see the region guide.
- Someone will ask about the SLA. A 100% uptime SLA, daily encrypted backups kept 30 days in a separate datacenter, and 24x7 support on the Enterprise plan are the answers a board or a client wants to hear.
- You expect to grow past the connection cap. Fifty simultaneous connections is generous for five people and tight for fifty with desktop clients, phones and Talk calls all open at once. Hub plans scale per seat, and above 50 users move to a dedicated instance.
- You want the Enterprise branch. Hub plans run Nextcloud Enterprise Ultimate; our Enterprise vs Community guide explains why that matters to some organisations and not others.
There is also a middle path many teams take: a Storage Share instance for a large cold archive, and a Hub plan for the people who collaborate every day. Nextcloud's external storage and federated sharing make that workable, and the object storage guide shows the general pattern.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Hetzner Storage Share cheaper than managed Nextcloud hosting?
Per gigabyte, yes by a wide margin: 1 TB for about 4.29 euros a month excluding VAT at the time of writing, against 100 GB per user on a $5.90 Nextcloud Hub Starter seat. Per user with office, chat and email included, no: a Hub seat already contains the apps a Storage Share team would have to buy elsewhere.
Does Hetzner Storage Share include Nextcloud Office and Talk?
The product page lists Contacts, Calendar and Tasks as pre-installed and points to the App Store for more; it does not list an office suite or video calling, and Talk's high-performance backend is not something you can add to a shared instance. Check with Hetzner before relying on either. Every MassiveGRID Hub plan includes Nextcloud Office and Talk.
Where is Hetzner Storage Share hosted?
In Hetzner's Falkenstein datacenter in Germany. There is no choice of region. MassiveGRID's Hub plans offer the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom or Asia at checkout.
How many users can a Storage Share instance have?
Unlimited accounts, but 50 (NX11), 100 (NX21) or 200 (NX31) simultaneous connections. Each desktop client, phone and browser tab counts, so a team of 25 with sync clients and Talk open can reach the NX11 cap. Hub plans are priced per seat and have no connection cap of that kind.
Can I use both?
Yes. A common pattern is a Storage Share instance as a large archive and a per-user Hub plan for daily collaboration, connected through Nextcloud's external storage or federated sharing.
