An Open Source Microsoft 365 Alternative

Nextcloud is the open-source suite that replaces Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams and the Office apps: AGPL-licensed server, free clients, open formats and protocols, and the freedom to run it yourself or have it run for you. MassiveGRID's Nextcloud Hub is the managed version, on the Nextcloud Enterprise branch, from $5.90 per user per month in the region you choose; the self-hosted version is free software plus your own server.

What open source buys you here

Audit, exit and no licence counter

"Open source" in this search usually means three things at once: software whose code you can read and audit, a licence that lets you self-host or move provider without permission, and data formats and protocols that are not one vendor's property. Nextcloud meets all three. The server is AGPL-licensed, the desktop and mobile clients are free, documents are stored as DOCX, XLSX, PPTX and ODF, and sync, calendar, contacts and mail use WebDAV, CalDAV, CardDAV and IMAP. A company on a managed Nextcloud plan can take the same data to a self-hosted server, or to another provider, with the tools it already uses every day.

Against Microsoft 365 specifically, that means no tenant, no per-feature SKU and no licence true-up. The Enterprise subscription that MassiveGRID runs the Hub platform on, and that dedicated instances carry, adds a certified build, a longer maintenance lifecycle and vendor support; it does not add proprietary code or remove features from the community edition. Our Enterprise vs Community guide explains the difference.

Other open-source suites, honestly

Where Nextcloud is not the answer

openDesk is the German public sector's sovereign suite and bundles Nextcloud with other open-source components for ministries; see our guide. ONLYOFFICE Workspace is document-first with a Microsoft-like editor, and its community edition caps simultaneous connections. Zimbra's open-source edition replaces Exchange only. ownCloud is Nextcloud's ancestor and narrower; our three-way comparison sets them side by side. For a full business suite with mail, files, documents, chat and video in one open-source product, Nextcloud is the one with the most users and the broadest app catalogue, which is why it is the one we run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The server is licensed under the AGPL, the desktop and mobile clients are free, and the Enterprise subscription adds certification, maintenance and support without proprietary features. Nextcloud Office runs on open-source engines (Collabora Online or Euro-Office).
For mail, files, documents, chat, video, calendar and contacts, yes. The honest exceptions are desktop Excel at its most complex, and the Intune, Defender and identity bundle on Business Premium, which are not collaboration features and need their own tools.
No. MassiveGRID's Nextcloud Hub plans run the same open-source suite on a managed Nextcloud Enterprise platform from $5.90 per user per month, with updates, backups and support included. Self-hosting is the choice for teams with a Linux administrator and a reason to run it.
Managed Nextcloud Hub seats cost $5.90, $12.90 and $19.90 against Microsoft's $7, $14 and $22 after July 2026, before Hub's 20% to 40% term discounts. Self-hosted is free in licences and costs server time and administrator hours.
The same way you arrived: files over WebDAV or the desktop client, mail over IMAP, calendars and contacts over CalDAV and CardDAV, and Nextcloud's export and import tooling for a whole instance. That portability is the point of open source.
