Nextcloud Hub vs Microsoft 365

Microsoft 365 for business bundles Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams and the Office apps at about $6 to $22 per user per month, with the data in regions Microsoft chooses. MassiveGRID's Nextcloud Hub covers the same ground on Nextcloud Enterprise at $5.90 to $19.90 per user, with the data in the region you choose and no desktop licence tied to the seat. This page compares the three business plans of each.

The short verdict

MassiveGRID Nextcloud Hub against Microsoft 365
Verdict: Microsoft 365 wins if your company needs the desktop Office applications on every seat, runs on Excel in earnest, or wants Intune and Defender bundled with the suite; Business Standard and Premium are hard to beat for that. Nextcloud Hub wins on data location, on price per seat at every tier, on the absence of per-feature upsell, and on exit through open protocols. The hidden cost argument runs both ways: Microsoft's add-ons push the bill up, but so does under-estimating how much of your work lives in Excel. Test your worst spreadsheet during the $1 first month before deciding.

Where each one wins

An honest split

Choose Microsoft 365 if

  • Your company runs on desktop Excel, Word and PowerPoint and will not work in a browser
  • You want Intune, Defender and identity management bundled with the suite
  • You have 50 to 300 users and no appetite for any migration
  • Your integrations (Power Platform, Dynamics, line-of-business apps) assume Microsoft 365

Choose a Nextcloud Hub plan if

  • Where the data lives is a question clients, regulators or your board ask
  • Price matters at every tier, and you are tired of per-feature add-ons
  • Most of your work is documents, files, calls and mail rather than Excel models
  • You want to be able to leave: open protocols and a sync client that holds your files

Frequently Asked Questions

For files, documents, mail, calendar, contacts, chat and video calls, yes. The honest exceptions are companies that run on desktop Excel, that need Intune and Defender bundled, or whose line-of-business integrations assume Microsoft 365. Nextcloud Office opens and saves DOCX, XLSX and PPTX; test your most complex files first.
Yes. Every Hub plan includes a mailbox per user (Standard Email on Starter and Business), and the Enterprise plan includes Enterprise Email with delegation and other enterprise mail features. Nextcloud Mail also connects external IMAP accounts.
At list prices Starter ($5.90) is close to Business Basic (about $6), Business ($12.90) is close to Business Standard (about $12.50), and Enterprise ($19.90) undercuts Business Premium (about $22), before Nextcloud Hub's 20% annual and 40% 36-month discounts. The larger difference is data location and the absence of add-on creep.
Nextcloud Talk for chat, calls and screen sharing, with channels and announcements since Hub 26 Summer. Since Microsoft began unbundling Teams in some regions, the comparison depends on which Microsoft SKU you hold. The Talk comparison sets expectations honestly.
Files from OneDrive and SharePoint via the desktop client or WebDAV, mail over IMAP, calendars and contacts via CalDAV and CardDAV exports, MX records last. Our Microsoft 365 migration guide covers the sequence, and the migration service does it for you.
