100% Uptime SLA No Usage Meter From $9.58/mo

The Railway Alternative With a Price You Know in Advance

Railway bills per second: Hobby is $5 a month with $5 of usage, Pro $20 with $20, and resources cost about $20 per vCPU and $10 per GB of RAM per month, plus $0.05 per GB of egress (railway.com/pricing, 31 October 2026). Idle services are cheap; busy ones are not. Dokploy on a MassiveGRID server gives you the same Git deployments, databases and private networking for a fixed $9.58 a month and up, and MassiveGRID PaaS is the managed route with usage billing that still has a server we operate behind it.

Why teams leave Railway

Railway is the most developer-friendly of the usage-billed platforms, and its model is honest: you pay for what runs. Plans on 31 October 2026 were Hobby, $5 a month including $5 of usage, and Pro, $20 a month per workspace including $20 of usage with unlimited seats; usage is $0.00000772 per vCPU-second and $0.00000386 per GB-second, which Railway itself rounds to about $20 per vCPU per month and $10 per GB of RAM per month, plus $0.05 per GB of egress.

The arithmetic is what moves teams on. A service that keeps 2 vCPU and 4 GB busy all month is about $80 in usage; the same allocation is $9.58 on a MassiveGRID shared-core server and $19.80 on dedicated cores. Railway wins when most of your services idle most of the time; a VPS wins the moment they do not, and it also wins on predictability, because the price is the ceiling.

What Railway does better: paying nothing for idle services, scaling a service with a slider in seconds, and a platform you never maintain. If your stack is a handful of services that sleep most of the day, Railway's bill may be lower than any VPS.

Two routes off Railway

There are two honest routes off Railway, and the right one depends on how much operating you want to do.

Route 1: Dokploy on a VPS you own

A free, open-source dashboard on a MassiveGRID server preset for Dokploy: Git push deployments with webhooks, preview deployments for pull requests, automatic HTTPS through Traefik, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB and Redis as services with scheduled backups, scheduled jobs, rollbacks, a web terminal and a template catalogue of 500+ open-source apps. The server is the whole bill, $9.58 a month for the 2 vCPU, 4 GB Starter preset and $39.60 for the 4 vCPU, 8 GB Growth preset on dedicated cores, and MassiveGRID installs Dokploy for you on request. Coolify is the same route with a different dashboard; the self-hosted PaaS page compares the two with CapRover and Dokku.

Route 2: MassiveGRID PaaS, managed

If leaving Railway must not mean running anything, MassiveGRID PaaS deploys from Git or a Docker image onto a platform we operate, with vertical and horizontal scaling, a 100% uptime SLA, a marketplace of one-click packages and usage billing from $2.46 per cloudlet-month. It costs more than a bare VPS and less than the managed platforms per unit of resource, and there is no server to patch.

Migrating from Railway to Dokploy

  1. Export variables per service with railway variables (or from the dashboard) and paste them into each Dokploy application's Environment tab.
  2. Recreate services in a Dokploy project from the same repositories. Railway's Nixpacks builds map to Dokploy's Nixpacks or Railpack build type without changes; set the domain port to the port your service binds.
  3. Move databases with pg_dump or mysqldump against the Railway public connection, restore into Dokploy database services from the web terminal, and update the connection variables; private hostnames become the Dokploy service names.
  4. Volumes: copy data with rsync or a tarball into a named volume mounted on the Dokploy service, and add it to Volume Backups.
  5. Cron services become Schedule Jobs; PR environments become Preview Deployments.
  6. Switch DNS once Traefik has issued certificates, and keep the Railway project alive for a week.

Pick an Allocation, Pay the Same Every Month

Starter is 2 vCPU and 4 GB for $9.58, the allocation that costs about $80 a month in Railway usage when it runs flat out; Growth is 4 vCPU and 8 GB for $19.16. Switch to dedicated cores when builds and response times must be steady. Dokploy is free and installed on request.

One Command, Full Platform

SSH into your new MassiveGRID server and run this command. Dokploy will install Docker, set up Traefik, configure SSL, and launch the dashboard automatically.

root@massivegrid:~
$ curl -sSL https://dokploy.com/install.sh | sh

Requires a fresh server with Ubuntu 24.04 or Debian 12, at least 2 GB of RAM and 30 GB of disk, and ports 80, 443 and 3000 free. The installer needs root access and sets up Docker, Traefik and all dependencies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions from teams moving off Railway.

Is a VPS always cheaper than Railway?
No. Railway bills per second, so a stack that idles most of the day can cost less than any fixed server. A stack that keeps its allocation busy costs about $20 per vCPU and $10 per GB of RAM per month on Railway, against $9.58 for 2 vCPU and 4 GB on a MassiveGRID shared-core server. The crossover is roughly 25 percent utilisation; above it the VPS wins, and it always wins on predictability.
Does Dokploy have Railway-style private networking and volumes?
Yes. Services in a Dokploy project share a Docker network and reach each other by service name, and persistent data lives in named Docker volumes that Dokploy’s Volume Backups can copy to S3 on a schedule. Compose stacks and database services work the same way.
Will I lose preview deployments when I leave Railway?
No. Dokploy builds each pull request into its own environment on a generated domain when the Git provider sends the webhook, and tears it down when the pull request closes. Each preview is a running container, so budget RAM for the number you keep open at once; the Growth preset (8 GB) handles a handful comfortably.
Who installs and maintains Dokploy on the MassiveGRID server?
Installation is one command on the Ubuntu 24.04 image, or you open a ticket after ordering and MassiveGRID installs Dokploy at no charge. Updating Dokploy is one command you run when you choose; the server, its failover, storage, network and DDoS protection are MassiveGRID’s job, with 24/7 support. If you want the platform operated for you as well, MassiveGRID PaaS is the managed route.
