An Open Source Google Workspace Alternative

Nextcloud is the open-source suite that does Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet, Chat and Calendar's jobs: AGPL-licensed server, free clients, open formats and protocols, and the freedom to run it yourself or have it run for you. MassiveGRID's Nextcloud Hub is the managed version, on the Nextcloud Enterprise branch, from $5.90 per user per month in the region you choose.

What open source buys you here

Audit, exit and no advertising model

"Open source" in this search usually means three things at once: software whose code you can read and audit, a licence that lets you self-host or move provider without permission, and data formats and protocols that are not one vendor's property. Nextcloud meets all three. The server is AGPL-licensed, the desktop and mobile clients are free, documents are stored as DOCX, XLSX, PPTX and ODF, and sync, calendar, contacts and mail use WebDAV, CalDAV, CardDAV and IMAP. A company on a managed Nextcloud plan can take the same data to a self-hosted server, or to another provider, with the tools it already uses every day.

Against Google Workspace specifically, it also means no advertising business behind the suite and no AI features you did not ask for: on a Nextcloud instance the Assistant is something you enable, with models you choose, not something that arrived with a price increase. Our Gemini page covers the Google side of that.

Other open-source suites, honestly

Where Nextcloud is not the answer

openDesk for European public bodies, ONLYOFFICE DocSpace for document-first teams, Zimbra for mail only, and ownCloud or Seafile for file sync without the suite; our comparison covers the last two. For the whole of what Google Workspace does in one open-source product, Nextcloud is the broadest, which is why MassiveGRID runs it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nextcloud, which replaces Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet, Chat, Calendar and Contacts under the AGPL with free clients and open formats. Run it yourself, or on MassiveGRID's managed Nextcloud Hub plans from $5.90 per user per month.
Export them as DOCX, XLSX and PPTX with Google Takeout or the admin export and they open in Nextcloud Office. Everyday documents convert cleanly; spreadsheets with Apps Script and documents built on Google-only add-ons need checking.
No. Managed Nextcloud Hub plans run the same open-source suite on a Nextcloud Enterprise platform with updates, backups and support included, in the region you choose. Self-hosting is for teams with a Linux administrator and a reason.
Managed seats are $5.90, $12.90 and $19.90 against Google's $7, $14 and $22, before Hub's term discounts; self-hosting is free in licences and costs server time and hours. The bigger difference is where the data lives.
The Nextcloud Assistant is open source and runs against models you choose, local or remote; it is included on the Ultimate tier for dedicated instances and optional elsewhere. Nothing is enabled or trained on your data without your decision.
