A missed stop on a funded account does not cost you a trade, it costs you the account, which is why prop-firm traders ask about a VPS more than anyone. The answer depends entirely on the firm. Some welcome a VPS, some allow it only below a certain account size or only with a dedicated IP address, and some treat any VPS login as a breach. This guide quotes each firm's own rule on VPS use, Expert Advisors, IP addresses and copy trading, as published on 24 October 2026, and then describes what a compliant setup looks like where one is allowed. Rules change often and firms enforce them at their discretion, so read the current page at the firm before you rely on anything here, and if a firm says no, the right answer is to trade from your own machine.
The rules at a glance
All quotations are from the firms' own FAQ, help-centre or terms pages, checked on the firms' own help centres and terms on 24 October 2026. "Not stated" means the firm's pages do not address the point; it does not mean the practice is allowed. Sources are listed under Further Reading.
| Firm | VPS | Expert Advisors | IP, copy trading and sharing |
|---|---|---|---|
| FTMO | Allowed: "The use of VPN/VPS is also generally allowed." Do not change geolocation to the United States when using MetaTrader, cTrader or TradingView. | Allowed, including "algorithmic trading or EAs". Hyperactive accounts (more than 2,000 server requests a day), "ultra-high-speed tools" and exploiting slow data feeds are forbidden. | No third party may access your account. Identical trading across multiple accounts, including trades copied from the same third-party source, may be suspended above the capital limit. Same-IP rule: not stated. |
| FundedNext | Restricted: "VPS usage is not permitted on account sizes of $50,000 and above." Below that, allowed with trade-taking EAs; "VPS usage for manual trading is strictly prohibited." Recommends "private VPS services with a dedicated IP address"; sharing a VPS is prohibited; broker-sponsored MetaTrader VPS is prohibited. | Allowed as a paid add-on on $5K to $25K accounts, MT4 and MT5 only. | Copy trading only between accounts owned by the same person, with one Master account and a $300,000 cap; a VPS-based copier between your own challenge accounts is permitted; cloud copiers are banned; no copying when a funded account is involved on either side. |
| The5ers | Not stated. | Allowed if you own the source code and the EA does not copy others' signals, tick-scalp, do latency or hedge arbitrage, or trade at high frequency; the terms also require prior written approval for automated software. | You may copy your own trades across your own accounts. Coordinating or copying with other traders, account sharing and third-party EAs that other traders run are prohibited. Same-IP rule: not stated. |
| Funding Pips | Prohibited: "Connecting to a VPN or VPS while accessing your trading account is not permitted." | Third-party EAs only as a trade or risk manager; a fully automated EA you own needs a "Personal EA Exception" with proof of ownership. | The IP region used to buy, log in and trade must stay consistent. Copying from your Funding Pips account to an external account is allowed; copying into it from outside is prohibited. |
| E8 Markets | Not stated. | Allowed, "one strategy per user"; several users running the same EA can lead to termination. | Copy trading across your own accounts allowed; teams, signal services and cross-account hedging prohibited; users on the same IP or in the same residence share one collective capital maximum. |
| Alpha Capital Group | Allowed with conditions: "It must have a static dedicated IP address" and you must email support before using it, naming the accounts. | Allowed on MT5 only, pre-approved, and only for trade management; EAs that open trades without human oversight are prohibited, as are third-party bots, HFT and latency arbitrage. | "We do not allow multiple users to operate accounts through the same IP address." IP masking prohibited. Copying from your own external Master account allowed with proof of ownership; group trading prohibited. |
| Topstep (futures) | Prohibited: "The use of VPS, VPNs, and remote servers is prohibited by Topstep's Terms of Use." A private server may store data or backtest "but it cannot trade." | Custom bots allowed on simulated accounts through the TopstepX API, subject to the HFT prohibition; not on Live Funded accounts. | VPNs, proxies and geo-obfuscation prohibited; no account sharing or trading on behalf of others. Data servers stated to be in Northern Virginia. |
| Apex Trader Funding (futures) | Not stated as a rule; the user agreement bars servers used to hide identity, device or location. | Prohibited on funded accounts: "AI, Autobots, algorithms, fully automated trading systems, and high-frequency trading"; set-and-forget systems running 24 hours are "strictly prohibited". | No other party, system or copy service may manage the account; copying between your own accounts allowed; sharing IP addresses or computers with other traders forbidden. |
Two patterns stand out. The CFD firms that allow a VPS (FTMO, FundedNext below $50K, Alpha Capital) all tie it to the trader being the only person on that server and, in two cases, to a dedicated IP address. The futures firms (Topstep, Apex) are built around a trader at a screen and treat unattended automation, and in Topstep's case any remote server, as a breach.
Why the firms care about VPS and IP addresses
None of these rules is about latency. They exist because a prop firm pays out on trading skill it can attribute to one person, and a VPS is where that attribution gets muddy. One server running the same EA for ten traders looks like ten accounts trading one strategy, which is the "group trading" or "same strategy" pattern every firm bans. A shared IP address makes two unrelated traders look like one person running two sets of accounts to beat the capital cap. A VPS in another country makes a trader look like they are hiding where they are, which matters to firms that restrict US clients or specific jurisdictions.
That is why the firms that permit a VPS keep asking for the same things: a server nobody else uses, a dedicated IP address that only you log in from, no geolocation games, and an EA you own rather than one sold to a thousand people. Meet those and a VPS is just a more reliable computer; miss them and it is a red flag, however honest the trading.
What a compliant setup looks like where a VPS is allowed
- Read the firm's current page first. The table above was accurate on 24 October 2026; the FundedNext size limit and the Alpha Capital notification rule are the kind of detail that changes without announcement.
- One trader, one server. Never share a VPS with another trader, even a friend running a different strategy. Every MassiveGRID Forex VPS is a private virtual machine with its own dedicated IPv4 address, which is the setup FundedNext recommends and Alpha Capital requires.
- Keep the IP story consistent. Buy the challenge, log into the dashboard and trade from a consistent region. Do not route the VPS through a VPN, and do not pick a server city to appear to be somewhere you are not; FTMO specifically warns against appearing to be in the United States.
- Tell the firm when it asks you to. Alpha Capital wants an email naming the accounts before you use a VPS. Send it and keep the reply.
- Own the EA. The5ers requires the source code, Funding Pips requires proof of ownership for a personal exception, and FTMO and E8 both warn that a widely sold EA puts you in the same trades as strangers. A strategy you wrote or commissioned is safer on every firm.
- Copy only between your own accounts, and only where allowed. FundedNext permits a VPS-based copier between your own challenge accounts but not when a funded account is involved; Funding Pips allows copying out but not in. Cloud copiers are banned at FundedNext outright.
- Keep humans in the loop where the firm requires it. Alpha Capital and Apex only accept automation that a trader is actively monitoring. A VPS does not change that; it just keeps the terminal alive between your checks.
Which city for a prop-firm account
Most CFD prop firms run MetaTrader or cTrader through a technology provider or a partner broker and do not publish where the servers are; FTMO says only that the "geographical location of the server/data centre" affects delay, and Topstep names Northern Virginia for its data feed. So the usual method applies: open the login dialog in your platform on your own PC, read the ping for the firm's server, and compare it with the reading from a trial server in each candidate city. A single-digit ping from a city means the server is there. The latency guide walks through it, and the Forex VPS page lets you order any of New York, London, Frankfurt or Singapore and switch within the 15-day money-back window if the first guess is wrong.
For challenge accounts the latency usually matters less than the uptime: the strategies that pass evaluations are rarely scalpers, and what kills them is a terminal that was not running when the stop should have fired. Every MassiveGRID Forex VPS runs on a Proxmox HA cluster with a 100% uptime SLA, which is the reason to use one at all. Traders who also run backtests or several challenge accounts at once take the Pro tier for its reserved cores.
When not to use a VPS
If the firm prohibits it, do not. Funding Pips says plainly that connecting through a VPS while accessing the account is not permitted, and Topstep says a remote server may not trade. A funded account is worth far more than the convenience of unattended trading, and both firms state the consequence as suspension or termination. For those firms, run the platform on a machine you sit at, use the firm's own tools for risk management, and keep the VPS for backtesting, data storage and journaling, which Topstep explicitly allows.
The same caution applies where a firm is silent. The5ers, E8 and Apex do not publish a VPS rule, which means an unfavourable interpretation is possible after the fact. Ask support in writing before the challenge starts, keep the answer, and treat the capital caps and same-IP rules on those firms as applying to the VPS exactly as they would to a home PC.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does FTMO allow trading from a VPS?
Yes. FTMO's FAQ states that the use of a VPN or VPS is generally allowed, with one warning: traders using MetaTrader, cTrader or TradingView should avoid appearing to be located in the United States. FTMO also permits EAs and algorithmic trading, bans hyperactive accounts that send more than 2,000 server requests a day, and warns that a third-party EA may put you in the same trades as other traders. Checked on FTMO's pages on 24 October 2026.
Does FundedNext allow a VPS?
Only on account sizes below $50,000, only together with a trade-taking Expert Advisor, and only on a private VPS that nobody else uses; FundedNext recommends a dedicated IP address and prohibits VPS use for manual trading, shared VPS connections and broker-sponsored MetaTrader VPS. The EA add-on itself is sold on $5K to $25K accounts for MT4 and MT5. Those were the rules on 24 October 2026; check FundedNext's help centre before buying a challenge.
Will a VPS get my prop firm account flagged?
Not by itself at the firms that allow one. What gets accounts flagged is what a VPS can make easier: several traders on the same server or IP address, identical trades across accounts that belong to different people, a widely sold EA, or an IP region that keeps changing. A private server with a dedicated IP that only you use, running an EA you own, from a consistent region, is the setup FTMO, FundedNext and Alpha Capital describe. At Funding Pips and Topstep a VPS is prohibited and will be treated as a breach regardless.
Does a MassiveGRID Forex VPS have a dedicated IP address?
Yes. Each Forex VPS is a private virtual machine with its own dedicated IPv4 address; no other customer shares the server or the address. That is the arrangement FundedNext recommends and Alpha Capital requires for VPS use. It does not change your responsibility to follow the firm's rules on geolocation, copy trading and EA ownership.
A private Forex VPS with its own IP address, from $2.87 per month
One trader per server, a dedicated IPv4 address, New York, London, Frankfurt or Singapore, HA failover and a 100% uptime SLA, with a 15-day money-back guarantee. Check your firm's rules first; where a VPS is allowed, this is the setup they describe.
