Phase 1: DEPLOY (Steps 1-3)

Everything starts here. Choose your product tier, deploy Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, and make your first SSH connection. These three steps take under 10 minutes.

Step 1: Choose Your Product Tier

Evaluate your workload requirements. Start with a Cloud VPS for development, staging, and most production workloads — plans start at $1.99/mo with independent CPU, RAM, and storage scaling. Choose your datacenter based on your primary user base: NYC for Americas, London or Frankfurt for Europe, Singapore for Asia-Pacific. Step 2: Deploy Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Provision your VPS with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Select Ubuntu 24.04 LTS as your operating system during provisioning — it's the current long-term support release with security updates through 2029. After deployment, you'll receive your server's IP address, root password, and SSH port. Save these credentials securely — you'll need them exactly once for the initial connection before switching to SSH keys.

Step 3: First SSH Connection

Connect to your server via SSH and verify the environment. Open a terminal and connect with ssh root@your-server-ip. Verify you're running Ubuntu 24.04 with lsb_release -a, check available resources with free -h and df -h, and confirm network connectivity with ping -c 3 google.com. Phase 2: SECURE (Steps 4-10)

Security is not optional and it's not something you add later. These seven steps lock down your server before any applications are installed. Complete every step in this section — skipping any of them leaves a known attack vector open.

Step 4: Create a Non-Root User

Create a dedicated deploy user with sudo privileges. Running everything as root is dangerous — a single mistake or compromised application has unrestricted access to the entire system. Create a user named deploy (or your preferred username), add it to the sudo group, and verify sudo access works. From this point forward, never log in as root. Step 5: Harden SSH Access

Disable password authentication and root login, configure SSH key-only access. Copy your SSH public key to the server, then edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config to set PermitRootLogin no, PasswordAuthentication no, and PubkeyAuthentication yes. Restart the SSH daemon and verify you can still connect in a separate terminal before closing your current session. Step 6: Configure UFW Firewall

Enable the Uncomplicated Firewall and allow only necessary ports. Start with a default deny policy: sudo ufw default deny incoming and sudo ufw default allow outgoing. Allow SSH (sudo ufw allow 22/tcp), then enable with sudo ufw enable. Add additional ports only as you install services — HTTP (80), HTTPS (443), etc. Never open ports "just in case." Step 7: Install and Configure Fail2Ban

Deploy Fail2Ban to block brute-force attacks automatically. Install Fail2Ban, create a local jail configuration for SSH, and verify it's monitoring authentication logs. The default configuration bans IPs after 5 failed attempts for 10 minutes — tune these values based on your needs. Step 8: Configure Automatic Security Updates

Enable unattended-upgrades for automatic security patches. Ubuntu's unattended-upgrades package automatically installs security updates without manual intervention. Configure it to install security updates automatically, optionally enable automatic reboots for kernel updates (during a maintenance window), and set up email notifications for applied updates. Step 9: Configure AppArmor

Verify AppArmor is active and enforce profiles for installed services. Ubuntu 24.04 includes AppArmor enabled by default. Verify its status with sudo aa-status and confirm profiles are loaded for key services. Step 10: Enable Audit Logging

Install auditd and configure logging for security-relevant events. The Linux audit daemon tracks system calls, file access, and authentication events. Configure rules to monitor /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, sudo usage, and SSH configuration changes. Audit logs are essential for incident response — you can't investigate what you didn't record. Install Nginx as your web server and reverse proxy. Nginx handles static file serving, SSL termination, and proxying requests to your application. Install from the official Nginx repository for the latest stable version. Verify installation with nginx -v and confirm the default page loads. Step 12: Install Database Server

Install and configure your database — PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB, or both. PostgreSQL is recommended for most modern applications. Install it, create your application database and user, configure authentication in pg_hba.conf, and tune memory settings for your VPS RAM allocation. Step 13: Install Application Runtime

Install the runtime for your application language. Choose based on your application stack:

Install Docker Engine and Docker Compose. If your deployment uses containers, install Docker from the official repository (not the Ubuntu snap package). Add your deploy user to the docker group, install Docker Compose v2 as a plugin, and verify both work. Step 15: Configure Reverse Proxy

Set up Nginx as a reverse proxy for your application. Configure Nginx server blocks to proxy requests to your application server (Node.js on port 3000, Gunicorn on a Unix socket, PHP-FPM via FastCGI). Set up proper headers (X-Real-IP, X-Forwarded-For, X-Forwarded-Proto), configure WebSocket support if needed, and enable gzip compression. Step 16: Install SSL Certificates

Obtain and configure Let's Encrypt SSL certificates. Install Certbot, request certificates for your domains, and verify Nginx is serving HTTPS correctly. Configure automatic renewal (Certbot handles this via systemd timer). Test certificate renewal with sudo certbot renew --dry-run. HTTPS is mandatory for production — search engines penalize HTTP sites, browsers display warnings, and sensitive data transmitted over HTTP is exposed. Your stack is ready. Now deploy your actual application code and configure it for production operation.

Step 17: Deploy Application Code

Transfer your application code to the server and install dependencies. Clone your repository to the server (or use rsync/scp for deployment), install production dependencies, and verify the application starts without errors. Step 18: Configure Environment Variables

Set up production environment configuration. Create a .env file with production database credentials, API keys, session secrets, and service URLs. Set restrictive permissions (chmod 600 .env) so only the deploy user can read it. Never commit .env files to version control. Verify your application reads all required environment variables on startup.

Step 19: Configure Process Management

Set up process management to keep your application running. Your application needs to start on boot, restart on crashes, and manage multiple worker processes. Step 20: Configure Queue Workers

Set up background job processing for asynchronous tasks. Most production applications need background workers for email sending, file processing, webhook delivery, and scheduled reports. Install Redis as your queue backend (see our Redis guide), then configure your queue worker as a systemd service that starts on boot and restarts on failure. Step 21: Configure Scheduled Tasks

Set up cron jobs for recurring application tasks. Production applications need scheduled tasks: database maintenance, report generation, cache cleanup, subscription billing, and data synchronization. Use crontab for system-level tasks and your framework's built-in scheduler for application-level tasks. Always redirect output to log files for debugging. Step 22: Configure DNS

Point your domain to your VPS and verify DNS propagation. Create an A record pointing your domain to your VPS IP address. Add a CNAME for www if needed. Set a reasonable TTL (300-3600 seconds). Verify propagation with dig yourdomain.com and test that your application is accessible via the domain name. If you use Cloudflare or another CDN/proxy, configure the origin IP correctly.

Phase 5: OPTIMIZE (Steps 23-30)

Your application is running. Now make it fast. Optimization is iterative — measure first, then tune the bottleneck, then measure again.

Step 23: Tune Web Server

Optimize Nginx configuration for your workload. Set worker_processes auto to match CPU cores, increase worker_connections to 1024+, enable sendfile and tcp_nopush, configure gzip compression for text assets, and set up static file caching with proper expires headers. Step 24: Tune Database

Configure database memory allocation and query performance. PostgreSQL's default configuration is conservative — it assumes 128MB of RAM. Set shared_buffers to 25% of total RAM, effective_cache_size to 75%, and tune work_mem based on your query patterns. Enable and review the slow query log. Step 25: Tune Application Runtime

Optimize your application runtime for production. For PHP: tune PHP-FPM pool size, opcache settings, and memory limits — see our PHP optimization guide. For Node.js: configure PM2 cluster mode, set appropriate memory limits, and enable the production flag. For Python: tune Gunicorn worker count (2-4x CPU cores) and worker type (sync vs async).

Step 26: Configure Application Caching

Implement caching layers to reduce database load. Configure Redis for session storage and application caching (see our Redis guide). Set up Nginx microcaching for semi-dynamic content. Implement application-level caching for expensive database queries and API responses. Measure cache hit ratios to verify caching is effective.

Step 27: Tune Kernel Parameters

Optimize Linux kernel settings for your workload. Increase file descriptor limits, tune TCP settings for high-throughput connections, and optimize memory management. Set up swap space as a safety net for memory spikes. Even if your application normally fits in RAM, swap prevents the OOM killer from terminating processes during unexpected memory spikes. Create a swap file sized at 1-2x RAM for small VPS instances (2-4GB RAM) or equal to RAM for larger instances. Set vm.swappiness=10 to prefer RAM over swap. Step 29: Run Benchmarks

Establish performance baselines with load testing. Run benchmarks before and after optimization to measure improvement. Use wrk, ab, or k6 to test HTTP throughput. Use pgbench for database performance. Document baseline numbers — you'll need them to evaluate future changes and detect performance regressions. Determine if your current resources match your workload. Review benchmark results, monitor resource utilization over a week, and identify bottlenecks. If CPU is consistently above 80%, add cores. Phase 6: MONITOR (Steps 31-35)

You can't fix what you can't see. Monitoring turns invisible problems into alerts before they become outages.

Step 31: Set Up Uptime Monitoring

Deploy an uptime monitoring solution that checks your services every 60 seconds. Install Uptime Kuma for a self-hosted monitoring dashboard, or use an external service for checks that don't depend on your server being up. Monitor HTTP endpoints, TCP ports (database, Redis), SSL certificate expiration, and DNS resolution. Configure alerts via email, Slack, or webhook. Step 32: Configure Resource Monitoring

Set up system resource monitoring with historical data. Deploy Prometheus for metrics collection and Grafana for visualization. Monitor CPU usage, memory utilization, disk space and I/O, network throughput, and application-specific metrics. Set up dashboards that show trends over days and weeks, not just current values. Step 33: Configure Log Management

Centralize and structure your application and system logs. Configure log rotation with logrotate to prevent disk full conditions. Set up structured logging in your application for easier searching and analysis. Know where to find key log files: /var/log/syslog, /var/log/auth.log, /var/log/nginx/, and your application logs. Step 34: Configure Alerts

Set up alerts for critical conditions that require immediate attention. Configure alerts for: disk usage above 85%, memory usage above 90%, CPU sustained above 95% for 5+ minutes, any 5xx error rate above 1%, SSL certificate expiring within 14 days, and any monitored service going down. Alerts should go to a channel you actually check — email, Slack, PagerDuty. False positives should be tuned out quickly, or you'll start ignoring real alerts.

Step 35: Establish Performance Baseline

Document normal performance metrics as a reference for troubleshooting. Record typical values for: average response time, p95 and p99 latency, requests per second, database query time, memory usage pattern over 24 hours, and disk I/O patterns. These baselines are essential for diagnosing problems — you can't identify "abnormal" without knowing "normal." Phase 7: PROTECT (Steps 36-42)

Protection is about preparing for failures that haven't happened yet. Backups, disaster recovery, and security audits are investments that pay off when things go wrong — and eventually, things will go wrong.

Step 36: Configure Automated Backups

Set up daily automated backups of all critical data. Configure automated backups for: database dumps (pg_dump/mysqldump), application data directories, uploaded files, configuration files (Nginx, application .env, cron jobs), and Docker volumes if applicable. Step 37: Configure Offsite Backups

Copy backups to a location that survives server destruction. Local backups protect against accidental deletion and application errors. Offsite backups protect against hardware failure, datacenter events, and account compromise. Use rsync or rclone to sync backup files to a separate server, S3-compatible storage, or a second VPS in a different datacenter. Step 38: Test Backup Restoration

Verify that your backups actually work by performing a test restore. An untested backup is not a backup — it's a hope. At minimum quarterly, restore your database backup to a test database and verify data integrity. Restore your application files and confirm the application starts. Step 39: Create Disaster Recovery Plan

Step 40: Run Security Audit

Perform a comprehensive security audit against your hardened server. Review all open ports (ss -tlnp), verify no unnecessary services are running, check file permissions on sensitive files, review sudo access, verify SSH configuration, check for outdated packages with known vulnerabilities, and scan for rootkits with rkhunter or chkrootkit. Step 42: Monitor SSL Certificates

Verify SSL auto-renewal works and set up expiration alerts. Let's Encrypt certificates expire every 90 days. Certbot auto-renewal should handle this, but verify it's working: sudo certbot renew --dry-run. Set up monitoring alerts for certificates expiring within 14 days (Step 31 covers this). Phase 8: MAINTAIN (Steps 43-48)

A production server isn't a "set and forget" system. These ongoing maintenance tasks keep your server secure, performant, and reliable over months and years.

Step 43: Establish Update Schedule

Define and follow a regular update cadence. Security updates should apply automatically (Step 8). For other packages, schedule monthly manual updates: review pending updates, read changelogs for breaking changes, apply updates during a maintenance window, and verify services restart correctly.
